Hush'd was the ev-'ning hymn
Hush'd was the ev-'ning hymn,
The tem-ple courts were dark,
The lamp was burn-ing dim
Be-fore the sa-cred ark.
When sud-den-ly a voice di-vine
I Rang through the si-lence of the I shrine.
Oh give me Sam-uel's ear!
The o-pen ear, O Lord,
A-live and quick to hear
Each whis-per of Thy word;
Like him to an-swer at Thy call,
And to o-bey Thee first of all.
Oh give me Samuel's heart!
A lowly heart, that waits
Where in Thy house Thou art.
Or watches at Thy gates,
By day and night, a heart that still
Moves at the breathing of Thy will.
Oh, give me Samuel's mind!
A sweet unmurm'ring faith.
Obedient and resigned
To Thee in life and death.
That I may read, with childlike eyes.
Truths that are hidden from the wise.
